Parenting Superpowers

No Threats. No Bribes. No Endless Negotiations

Superpowers—the strategies I use to head off everyday challenges with preschoolers.

Arising out of my years as an early childhood teacher (working with 1000s of children), superpowers were how I got their cooperation, avoided power struggles, and gently built real connection.

I still use them.

If I need a grandchild to transition from an activity they’re engaged in, I might use Binary Choices or set a Timer. If time allows ahead of time, I will Pre-Warn Transitions. When my grandchild’s activity just needs to stop, I might use Distraction or Positive Instructions. If I want to connect with them, I Get On Their Level. If there’s a conflict, I use Curiosity Before Control. And always in the background, I use Routines to set clear expectations and minimise pushback.

Different circumstances. Different children. Different superpowers.

They all work—and they’re all in Parenting Superpowers. Nineteen powerful techniques that you can use to connect with your child, and parent them with confidence, gentleness, and joy. Gently.

About Parenting Superpowers

Inside my book you'll find 19 game-changing strategies organized into three easy-to-follow superpower categories:

  • Cooperation Superpowers: How to win a child’s willingness.
  • Connection Superpowers: How to build trust, safety, and emotional closeness.
  • Foundation Superpowers: How to set things up to go smoothly.

The superpowers can be used each on their own (a great way to get comfortable with them) or as you become more expert, in combination to get the maximum effect.

All chapters in the book follow the same structure:

  • Why use the superpower
  • What it is
  • Why it works
  • How to use it
  • Examples of the superpower being used
  • Age-specific approaches
  • What the superpower is best for
  • Common mistakes
  • How you say it matters
  • When it’s not working...
  • Building the habit
  • Quick start tips

It’s your practical, real-world guide, written without jargon. You can read it right through, or use it as a reference and dip in an out. The chapters all standalone.

You’ll soon find yourself deftly diffusing or deflecting those difficult moments with all the skill and power of a true superhero!
